Waveney Belties at Suffolk Show

We had a great time at Suffolk Show this year winning the junior heifer class with Waveney Anna, and coming second in the junior bull class with Waveney Andy.

Unfortunately young calf Waveney Bomber was taken poorly at the show and so we took him and his mum Waveney Velvet home early from the show…..we wondered how poorly he really was when he came out of the trailer at 100mph living up to his “Bomber” name!! Anyway both Mum and baby are doing fine at home now.

It was lovely to take Anna and Andy in the Grand Parade and meet up with friends and customers at the show….!

Celebrating Great British Beef Week on Radio Norfolk and in the EDP

We are celebrating Great British Beef Week from the 23rd to the 30th April 2023.

We have been on Kayleigh Poacher’s morning show on Radio Norfolk with the cows (14/04/23 38 minutes in) talking about how we farm and of course our special cattle. Sarah Chambers at Archant also wrote an article for the Eastern Daily Press and East Anglian Daily Times about the farm, the belted galloways and conservation grazing with Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

Barn Owl chicks hatch at Carr Farm

Great news! We have had barn owl chicks in not just one but both owl boxes😊 two in the barn box AND two in the horse chestnut tree box, all weighed, measured, ringed and carefully returned to the boxes a few weeks ago.

Then this week they have been caught on our wildlife camera fledging, this evening we have seen both youngsters from the barn box making small flights and returning to the barn. The two from the tree box which were we think a little older have been seen hunting and roosting in one of the oak trees – a great result!

Reserve Champion at Royal Norfolk & Champion at Kent Show

We’ve had a busy few weeks with the belties at the Shows, it has been great to meet so many of our supporters, followers and customers at these events.

We had the full team at the Royal Norfolk where they hold classes specifically for Belted Galloways and there was a great entry of over 30 animals. Our senior heifer Vanessa won her class, and Cow with calf; Zoe and Wizard won their class. Both animals went on to be Female and reserve female champion and Vanessa was Reserve overall Best of Breed Champion so pretty happy with that, as an added bonus Princess Anne came into the ring for the final judging.

Down at the Kent County Show we participated in the Native Breed Classes, where our yearling heifer Velvet won her class, Vanessa won the senior class, they both won the pairs and Vanessa was overall Champion. It’s been 40 years since last visiting the Kent County Show and we much enjoyed our return.

Waveney Beltie Winner at South Suffolk Show

It was great to get back to the shows with the Belties after two years at the South Suffolk Show – the little gang did us proud, were almost on their best behaviour, the sun shone, caught up with lots of folks we haven’t seen for two years and we even came home with a few rosettes into the bargain including a first in the Junior Heifer Class for young Waveney Velvet……..and in a few weeks time we can do it all again😊

Waveney Belties on Countryfile

So if you watched carefully on BBC’s Countryfile on Sunday 23rd August you may have caught sight of our Belties on the Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s Petos Marsh at Carlton near Lowestoft. The belties do alot of important conservation grazing for the Trust at both Oulton and Carlton marshes as well as the Camps Heath Nature Reserve.

The Belties wrap their tongues around vegetation and pull it up in tufts, which creates an uneven sward in terms of length and a tussocky finish. They are good at pushing their way through scrub and creating open areas, in addition to eating longer and coarser grasses, reeds and willow. The low-intensity grazing provided by the cattle are promoting a shift from reed/scrub to grass and herbs, with plants such as wild mint, ragged robin, vetches and rare orchids flourishing on these wetland areas. The dung also provides habitat for invertebrates which results in an increase in butterflies and beetles and a richer habitat for flora and fauna.

Waveney Harnser wins National Belted Galloway Title at Westmorland

We had an amazing time up at the Belted Galloway National Show at the Westmorland County Show in the Lake District this week. It was a lovely show despite the weather and long old haul up from Norfolk and so unexpectedly worthwhile.

Our dun beltie bull Waveney Harnser won his class, Champion bull class and was Best of Breed Champ! (image above courtesy of the Farmers Guardian). As the National Show is held every two years to we get to keep his fine Mochrum Perpetual Challenge Trophy for two years. Harnser’s dun half sister Waveney Coshie came second in her class and the two of them third in the pairs ….her young bull calf Waveney Scooby came last in his class and had a fine old time escaping the cattle lines overnight and checking out the other competitors!

Showing success for the Belties at Great Yorkshire & Royal Norfolk

We have had a successful season showing the belties with our dun bull Waveney Harnser taking reserve male and reserve best of breed at the Royal Norfolk, and then going one better at the Great Yorkshire winning his class and male champion. Our young red beltie heifer also did well at the Norfolk winning her class and reserve female champion and youngster Waveney Tiger came third in her first outing at the Norfolk.
